Austria entered the most severe recession in decades, requiring policy measures to stabilise the real economy and financial markets. Beyond the crisis, there is need to enhance labour productivity and labour utilisation, and to improve the education system.

With Austria’s official development assistance (ODA) at 0.42% of its gross national income (GNI) in 2008 (preliminary data) Austria was in 11th place among OECD’s Development Assistance Committee (DAC) donors. Austria’s net ODA fell by 14% to USD1.7 billion from 2007 to 2008, due to a lower level of debt relief grants provided in 2008.
