Session 1: Keynote opening speech by Alistair Macfarlane
Mr. Macfarlane's keynote speech provided an industry perspective and overview of globalisation processes. Covering major issues in each value chain element, he also provided an overview of how transnational operations in the fishing sector function, tracing fish from harvesting to consumers' plate and identify the way towards ensuring a responsive and pro-active industry environment.

Session 2: Retailing and distribution of fish: Trends and issues

The purpose of this session was to get a better understanding of the role of retailing and distribution of fish in the globalisation process and to address to what extent globalisation is driven by the increasing internationalisation of sourcing for retail. Representatives from major distributors addressed the workshop. Both capture fisheries and aquaculture perspectives were covered. The session also identified the impacts of globalisation on the retail and distribution elements of the fisheries value chain.

Session 3: Processing fish: Where, why and how?

This session gave an overview of the latest developments with respect to global processing and addressed how the future fish processing sector will look in a globalised economy. Representatives of primary and secondary processing industries provided experiences and insights. Both capture fisheries and aquaculture perspectives were covered.

Session 4: Identifying the parameters with which we are working in the harvesting sectors

This session sought to understand how globalisation is accommodated so that fisheries are managed in a sustainable and responsible way. The key issue was whether the present international and national fisheries governance structures are sufficient to both reap the benefits of globalisation while minimising the risks.

Session 5: Identifying the parameters with which we are working in the aquaculture sectors
This session discussed how globalisation is accommodated to ensure that aquaculture is managed in a sustainable and responsible way. Representatives from the industry and aquaculture producers provided insights and shared their experiences.

Session 6: Linkages along the value chain
Globalisation has resulted in an increasing degree of vertical integration both domestically and internationally. This session addressed the issues facing companies and government policies in an increasingly integrated world.

Session 7: Round Table -- Lessons for the future

This session, a round table discussion, summed up the issues and challenges in reaping the benefits from globalisation in each element of the value chain. The session also provided a forward-looking assessment of the role of proactive policies in ensuring that society reaps the potential benefits from globalisation while minimising adverse impacts.
