To maintain and build on this performance, government policy should increasingly focus on measures to boost innovation and improve sustainability performance, according to a new OECD report.
The Dutch food, agriculture and horticulture sector is innovative and export oriented, with high value-added along the food chain and significant world export shares for many products. Continuous adoption of innovation has permitted to reach high levels of productivity and sustained productivity growth, in particular at the farm level, in a context of increasing environmental regulatory constraints. The challenge is whether marginal improvements in current technologies and know-how will be enough to pursue current rates of productivity growth – sustainably – and whether the innovation system will be able to generate the new ideas that are needed to face future challenges, including those linked to climate change.
Fisheries production in OECD countries has declined by more than 39% since 1988 as overfishing reduces the productive capacity of the resource, according to a new OECD report.
The main objective of this workshop on 12 October 2015 is to bring together government officials, experts, researchers and policy makers to discuss and share information and examine potential impacts on agricultural productivity, competitiveness, innovation and sustainability as well as possible implications for public health.

In 2013, fish products accounted for 26% of total exports and fishing and fish processing represented 9.4% of GDP. The fishing industry is also a major source of employment, accounting for 4.7% of the civilian labour force in 2013.
