7 October 2016 – OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría congratulates Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on being awarded the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize.
"I have transmitted to President Santos my most sincere congratulations for his receiving the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize. We at the OECD welcome this news, which is much-deserved recognition of the efforts of the President, of his government and the Colombian people to make peace a reality. The OECD has always supported the peace process between the government and the FARC. We are confident that this important accolade from the international community will allow Colombia to find a way forward after the October 2 referendum result. Seldom was a prize more deserved, more timely and more necessary. I am sure that the Colombians will be able to bring this process to a successful conclusion. They can certainly count on the OECD in this process. We have been working closely with Colombia on its accession process to the OECD, with the aim of building a better future for all Colombians. Achieving a firm and lasting peace will be critical in this regard, and I think today the international community has demonstrated its unwavering support for the dialogue and national reconciliation effort led by President Santos.”
