Questions on social issues: Society at a Glance Quiz. Take quiz

Is your CEO really worth it?
Who’d be a CEO? Back in the days when the legendary Jack Welch was leading General Electric – and increasing its market value by more than athird of a trillion dollars – chief executive officers were the heroes of capitalism. These days, they seem as likely to show up on top-ten lists of failure. Read more

IPCC and climate change risks: what would you do?
The latest Climate Change Report from the IPCC argues that human interference with the climate system is occurring, and climate change poses risks for human and natural systems. The report identifies eight major risks with high confidence and this blog post allows the reader to vote on how to deal with each of them. Read more

The automotive sector: steering beyond the crisis
The car industry has taken a dent since the recession started to bite in 2008, but even before then, new patterns were emerging that would reshape the sector for a long time to come. OECD Observer article

Tax: Addressing the hybrids
The global campaign will continue in 2014 to improve international tax rules, many of which were first designed over a century ago, and to make them fit for the era of globalisation and new technologies. In 2013 policy attention was focused on the problem of profit shifting by global firms and its negative effects on tax bases, with the OECD issuing its widely publicised 15-point Action Plan on Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) to leaders at the G20 summit in September. A key action area in the plan concerns crossborder tax hybrid schemes, with an OECD report due to address the problem in 2014. How do they work? OECD Observer article

The ups and downs of GDP
Economic policy can achieve results only if policy makers – and the voters to whom they are accountable – know what is happening to the economy. Understanding the economy as a whole depends on the available statistics. So economic statistics shape policy and events, and the most closely watched measure is the growth of gross domestic product (GDP). OECD Yearbook article

A costly gender gap
Everyone needs to be sufficiently financially literate to take informed decisions for themselves and their families as to their savings, investments, pensions and more. But in many countries, women have lower financial knowledge than men, and are less confident in their financial knowledge and skills. OECD Observer article
