Highlights

Chile is one of the many non-member economies with which the OECD has working relationships in addition to its 30 member countries. Since 1993, Chile has participated in many OECD activities. In 1995, Chile formally requested to be considered for possible membership of the OECD.  The OECD Council at Ministerial level adopted a resolution on 16 May 2007 to open discussions with Chile for its membership of the Organisation. On 30 November 2007, the OECD council approved the 'roadmap to accession' for Chile, as well as four other prospective new members.

Mutual benefit

Chile values the opportunity to discuss major policy issues and challenges in a multilateral context. While this enable Chile to learn from the experiences of OECD countries facing similar challenges, OECD members also benefit from the co-operation with Chile, which has been a trailblazer of economic reform on the Latin American continent. Although much of the co-operation with Chile has taken place in the context of the Global Forums, or the regional programmes in Latin America, the OECD has undertaken several country studies of Chile in a number of policy areas, including three Economic Surveys.

How is the co-operation co-ordinated?

The OECD’s co-operation with Chile will henceforth primarily take place in the context of the country accession to OECD membership. Chile’s government has appointed a representative to co-ordinate the accession process on the Chilean side; on the OECD side, the process is co-ordinated by Deputy Secretary-General Mr. Richard Boucher. However, Chile will continue to participate in the OECD’s global relations programme. The OECD’s Centre for Co-operation with Non-Members develops and oversees the strategic orientation of this relationship and ensures that the dialogue remains focused, forward-looking and mutually beneficial.

Areas of work

In 2003, the OECD started to publish regular Economic Surveys of Chile. Since that year, policy reviews have been undertaken in other areas, notably education, competition law and policy, trade and competitiveness, environmental performance, statistics and innovation policy. Chile has also been an active participant in, and occasionally the host of, OECD Global Forums.

Chile’s participation in OECD general activities

Chile is a member of the OECD Development Centre and a participant in the Programme on Local Economic and Employment Development (LEED) and the Working Group on Bribery and the Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI). Chile also participates in several OECD Committees and Working Groups. Chilean Ministers also participate in dialogue sessions of the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting with non-OECD economies.
