The Trade Committee is the main OECD body where analytical work on trade is carried out in support of a strong, open and rules-based multilateral trading system. The Committee strives to build consensus to activate and enhance progress on the evolving multilateral trade agenda.
Reflecting the globalisation of industrial activities and the intertwined nature of trade dimensions with other policy fields, work focus has shifted from an emphasis on trade in goods to a more interdisciplinary consideration of trade issues. This has involved the consideration of trade dimensions in the context of numerous horizontal OECD projects.
Recognising a need to foster a better understanding of the benefits and challenges of trade liberalisation among the wider public, informal consultations are organised with Civil Society Organisations, business and union stakeholders. An extended dialogue on trade issues with non-member economies is also maintained and these countries are invited to participate in consensus-building efforts.
OECD work on trade helps forestall trade tensions and conflicts that emerge under the pressure of ever-intensifying competition. Trade work also encompasses the issue of export credits, which is an area where a multilateral arrangement prevails within the OECD framework. Top of page |
