The OECD Task Force on Harmonisation of Classification and Labelling was established in 1994 to develop a harmonised classification system for the hazards of chemicals and mixtures to human health and the environment and is the backbone of the GHS (Globally Harmonised Classification System). 2001 News Release - OECD Reaches Agreement on Criteria for a Globally Harmonised Classification System for Chemicals The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) adopted the Globally Harmonised System of Classification and labelling of Chemicals (GHS) in July 2003.
