Until May 2005, the Maritime Transport Committee looked at this sector from both the policy and economic perspectives.

It sought to eliminate obstacles to the free circulation of trade through the liberalisation of maritime and related services and by promoting compatible competition policies.

The Committee maintained an extensive programme of dialogue with non-OECD countries as a means of further promoting its objectives.

The Committee also promoted initiatives to encourage maritime security, safety and the protection of the marine environment. At the political level, it aided the International Maritime Organisation in its efforts to eliminate sub-standard shipping.
