In the Road Transport Research Programme, OECD Member countries explore issues in road transport and intermodal linkages in a broad economic, social and institutional context. The aim is to develop a strategic framework for improving national economic performance by integrating road transport in the entire transport system to ensure seamless transport.

Roads will continue to be the primary mode of transport for freight and passengers in most OECD countries in the foreseeable future. However, globalisation, decentralisation and mounting social and environmental costs place new demands on transport professionals and transport infrastructure.

The relationship between economic performance and transport infrastructure provision and management are key issues facing Member countries. Transport networks represent huge assets, and their management has extensive implications for trade, investment and economic performance.

Joint research and policy analysis give a better understanding of how such changes affect transport and allow countries to explore options to improve transport safety, efficiency and its contribution to sustainable development. The international co-operation fostered by the Programme allows countries to identify best practices and policies to obtain maximum benefit from their transport systems.
