The growing importance of intellectual property in knowledge-based economies has generated concerns about potential adverse effects of counterfeiting and piracy. A recent OECD study attempted to quantify the magnitude of these effects, and based on that framework this short report updates the quantitative results using more recent international trade statistics for the calendar years 2000-2007. The updated estimates suggest that counterfeit and pirated goods in international trade grew steadily over this period and could amount to up to USD 250 billion in 2007.
