The Environment, Health and Safety News is a newsletter issued approximately every eight months. Its purpose is to provide an update on the main events and activities of the OECD Environment, Health and Safety Programme. Information on new publications arising from the Programme as well as dates and venues of upcoming events and meetings are given.

As part of the OECD activities to promote international co-operation in addressing human health and environmental safety aspects of manufactured nanomaterials, the OECD has developed a global resource which details research projects that address safety issues of manufactured nanomaterials. This database holds details of completed, current and planned research projects on safety, which are to be updated and managed electronically by delegations to the OECD Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials. It builds on the work of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

Workshop on the safety testing of manufactured nanomaterials, Korea

This workshop is being held to move forward the "Sponsorship Programme" which was launched in 2007. This programme involves the safety testing of 14 nanomaterials for a set of endpoints related to human health and environmental safety. Amongst other things, the Workshop will assist those who will be organising the testing (OECD member countries together with the European Commission, China and Industry) to develop and co-ordinate their testing plans. This workshop is hosted by the Ministry of Environment in Korea and will take place on November 19-21 in Busan, Korea.

Given that the majority of the world’s population lives in cities accounting for 60 to 80 percent of emissions, cities are key actors in our efforts to achieve long-term sustainable solutions to the global climate change challenge, according to Mr. Gurría.

Many governments in OECD countries have taken it for granted that there will always be sufficient water. According to M. Gurría, this is no longer true and the need to ensure access to water will test our ability to work together (available in Spanish).
