"OECD Regions at a Glance" presents a set of regional indicators – mainly in the form of graphs and maps – in order to identify those regions that outperform their country as a whole or the OECD area and those that lag behind. The patterns of development may differ widely in urban and rural areas, for example, and some areas may lag behind even when the national economy is performing well.

In his keynote speech to the OECD Conference on Rural Development "Innovative Rural Regions: The Role of Human Capital and Technology", which took place in Cáceres, Spain, 21-23 March 2007, Mr. Gurría emphasised that innovation in science and technology is key to helping rural areas adapt to demographic shifts, economic globalisation and institutional change.

Based on a unique international database of 78 metro-regions, it provides indications related to large cities' performance within their countries. The report also addresses key dilemmas, including competitiveness and social cohesion, intergovernmental relationships and urban finance.

Presentation of the OECD Territorial Review of Milan

The OECD Territorial Review of Milan was officially presented to the Italian government and media on 27 November 2006 in Milan. Under the auspices of the Province of Milan, the event brought together more than 600 participants from Italian government, business, academia, civil society and media.
