Workshop on the Safety of Manufactured Nanomaterials

The Joint Meeting of the Chemicals Committee and Working Party on Chemicals, Pesticides and Biotechnology will be holding a Workshop on the Safety of Manufactured Nanomaterials at the end of the year. This event is being hosted by the United States in December 2005, in Washington, D.C. This Workshop is a follow up of the special session on the “potential implications of manufactured nanomaterials for human health and environmental safety ”, which was held the 7th June 2005.

The 38th Joint Meeting of the Chemicals Committee and Working Party on Chemicals, Pesticides and Biotechnology held a special session on the “potential implications of manufactured nanomaterials for human health and environmental safety”. The objective was to begin to identify human health and environmental safety issues associated with manufactured nanomaterials, which the Joint Meeting should address in the future.

This document provides a methodology for determining the emission load or initial concentrations from the use of antifouling products. “Fouling” is an unwanted growth of biological material, such as algae, on a surface immersed in water (salt or fresh water). To prevent fouling of immersed surfaces, antifouling products (antifoulants) are used. The document can  support risk assessments of antifouling products for notification and authorisation procedures in OECD countries.

Working Definitions of Key Terms

This document presents ten Working Definitions of key terms applicable to new and existing chemicals.  The Chemicals Committee and the Working Party on Chemicals, Pesticides and Biotechnology at its 37th Joint Meeting agreed on testing these working definitions and revisiting them within two years.

Israel joins South Africa and Slovenia as full adherents to the OECD Council Decisions related to the Mutual Acceptance of Data

Israel fulfilled all the conditions to adhere to the OECD system for the Mutual Acceptance of Data in the Assessment of Chemicals in January 2005, making it the third non-member country after South Africa and Slovenia to join this multi-lateral agreement related to non-clinical safety studies required for regulatory purposes.
