La Chine connaît une croissance économique spectaculaire depuis 1978, aux alentours de 8 à 9 % par an. En conséquence, le niveau de vie de la population est en moyenne bien plus élevé qu'il ne l'a jamais été dans toute l'histoire de la Chine. Cependant, les disparités économiques ont également augmenté de façon sensible durant cette période, soulevant des questions sur l'adéquation et la poursuite des politiques actuelles.
