Workshop on the Safety of Manufactured Nanomaterials

The Joint Meeting of the Chemicals Committee and Working Party on Chemicals, Pesticides and Biotechnology will be holding a Workshop on the Safety of Manufactured Nanomaterials at the end of the year. This event is being hosted by the United States in December 2005, in Washington, D.C. This Workshop is a follow up of the special session on the “potential implications of manufactured nanomaterials for human health and environmental safety ”, which was held the 7th June 2005.

The 38th Joint Meeting of the Chemicals Committee and Working Party on Chemicals, Pesticides and Biotechnology held a special session on the “potential implications of manufactured nanomaterials for human health and environmental safety”. The objective was to begin to identify human health and environmental safety issues associated with manufactured nanomaterials, which the Joint Meeting should address in the future.

The Joint Meeting of the Chemicals Committee and Working Party on Chemicals, Pesticides and Biotechnology endorsed an outreach strategy developed in accordance with the Council Resolution concerning the participation of non-members in the work of subsidiary bodies of the organisation [C(2004)132/Final].

New paper from the Annex I Expert Group on the UNFCCC

The AIXG has just released an important new study on climate change: "Approaches for Future International Co-operation ", by Cédric Philibert (International Energy Agency), was published on 14 June. This paper provides a repertory of approaches for future international co-operation in climate change mitigation, based on the literature. Most options presented suggest various forms of agreements on policies and measures, and technology-focused approaches. All are building blocks for the reader to consider a much broader set of options by combining them in various ways.

Several New Annex I Expert Group Studies Released for SB-22 in Bonn (15-27 May 2005)

The Annex I Expert Group released several new papers in time for the 22nd S.B. Sessions of the UNFCCC. Three additional case studies in the "Int'l Energy Technology Collaboration and Climate Change Mitigation" series: Appliance Energy EfficiencyClean Coal Technologies  and Wind Power Integration into Electricity Systems ;  In addition, "National Approaches to Adaptation" and "Exploring Options for Sectoral Crediting Mechanisms".  They were presented at the AIXG side event in Bonn, on Monday 23 May at 1 pm.

The United Kingdom Climate Change Levy: A Study in Political Economy

This document, prepared by Prof. David Pearce, assesses the political economy of the UK Climate Change Levy. The levy has contributed to the UK climate change targets. It may well have fared better than some regulations, but whether it has done better than a pure carbon tax is debateable.
