Results of the Forum on Space Economics' Third Steering Group Meeting, 25-26 Sept. 2008

The third meeting of the Space Forum's Steering Group was held in Paris on 25-26 Sept. 2008. After taking stock of the major outputs resulting from the Forum three years' existence (2006-2008), the members stated their continuing strategic interest. The Forum should therefore continue its activities in 2009 for a one-year transition period. It could then potentially evolve into an upgraded institutional format, subject to political support in supporting Member States and agencies.

En juin dernier, l'OCDE a publié conjointenant avec le Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre, une publication intitulée "Regional Integration in the Asia Pacific: Issues and Prospects".
La région Asie Pacifique, avec son économie dynamique et sa riche diversité culturelle, est vouée à jouer un rôle critique et important au niveau mondial.

This report was drafted in response to a proposal submitted by the United States Delegation at the March 2003 meeting of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development's Executive Committee in Special Session. It analyzes the economic and social impacts of recent large-scale disasters, and draws key lessons for the managment of future disasters. Its focus in primarily on restoring trust and securing recovery after a major harmful event has occurred.

Le risque est indissociable de notre vie depuis l’aube de l’humanité. Non seulement les situations de risque sont plus nombreuses aujourd’hui, mais les progrès de la technologie nous y ont sensibilisés davantage, qu’il s’agisse de ceux que nous connaissions déjà dans le passé, ou de nouveaux risques émergents qui sont associés à la marche du progrès. L’un des éléments clés de cette prise de conscience est que nous en savons aujourd’hui beaucoup plus sur le monde physique qu’au XIXè siècle et que pendant une bonne partie du XXè.

What is new about major risks in the 21st century? Recent years have witnessed a host of large-scale disasters of various kinds throughout the world: hugely damaging windstorms and flooding in Europe and ice storms in Canada; new diseases infecting both humans (AIDS, the Ebola virus) and animals (BSE); terrorist attacks such as those of 11 September 2001 in the United States and the Sarin gas attack in Japan; major disruptions to critical infrastructures caused by computer viruses or simply technical failure.

On 27 and 28 November 2001, the OECD held a Forum for the Future conference on "Policies for Economic and Social Transition in the 21st Century". The meeting build on four previous Forum conferences that examined the prospects for technology, economy, society and governance in the 21st Century.
