27/09/2011 - Investments in well-designed, multi-purpose local education facilities serve as a visible commitment to the community and a cost-effective way to revitalise local economies. That is the message from the OECD’s Designing for Education: Compendium of Exemplary Educational Facilities 2011, which presents over 60 state-of-the-art recently built or refurbished spaces with colour photographs, plans and descriptions. The Compendium brings together case studies from 28 countries, ranging from Argentina, Australia and Bangladesh to France, South Africa and the United States.

CELE is happy to announce that, out of a total of 166 submissions for recently-built or refurbished educational facilities, 60 particularly remarkable facilities from 28 countries have been selected. They will be featured in the next issue of the Compendium, to be published in 2011. Choosing between dozens of amazing innovative and inspiring designs, the jury also identified six particularly remarkable projects and one overall outstanding design. After two days of intense debate, the six-member international jury - nominated to select the most outstanding educational facilities among some 170 submissions - has reached consensus on the winning entries. The jury also identified an overall outstanding submission and five special commendations. The 4th Compendium will cover all levels of education and address how the design, use and management of buildings and grounds contribute to the quality of education.

The New York Times quotes the OECD publication Keeping Schools Safe in Earthquakes, which concludes that “schools ‘routinely’ collapsed in earthquakes around the world because of avoidable design or construction errors, or because existing laws and building codes were not enforced”. A review of OECD countries’ implementation of the Recommendation Concerning Guidelines on Earthquake Safety in Schools, featured in the report and approved by OECD Council in 2005, is under way.
