Offshore natural gas discoveries have released Israel from complete reliance on imported primary fuels and are allowing for a cleaner energy mix. Furthermore, additional production will soon come on stream, and there is a reasonable chance of new commercially viable gas finds, and possibly of oil too.

In the same vein as Becker, Philipson and Soares (2005), a simple index of economic progress weighs in the monetary cost induced by mitigation policies as well as the health benefits arising from the reduction in local air pollution.

Slovakia will need to build an effective framework for green growth to maximise its chances of exploiting cleaner sources of growth and to seize the opportunities to develop new green industries, jobs, and technologies.

ICELAND: Ensuring a sustainable and efficient fishery

Iceland has managed its large fishing industry in a sustainable and profitable way. The foundations of this success are setting Total Allowable Catches (TACs) based on scientific recommendations of what is biologically sustainable and the Individual Transferable Quota (ITQ) system, which gives each holder the right to catch a certain of the TAC in various species.

Environmental Ministers from the whole Europe, the US and Canada in their Declaration adopted at the Conference in May 2003 in Kiev, Ukraine adopted "Guiding Principles for Reform of Environmental Enforcement Authorities in Transition Economies of Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA)" as a basis for true institutional restructuring and rebuilding enforcement and compliance assurance systems following the crisis that touched the region in the 1990s.

Strong pressure is put on Belgian environment

High population and energy intensities and concentrated agriculture put strong pressure on Belgian environment. To minimise the costs of achieving environmental goals polluters should face the marginal costs of the externalities they impose, requiring higher reliance on environmental taxation. Moreover, there is a need for reviewing the division of environmental responsibilities to reduce the costs of lack of coordination and harmonisation of policies in light of economies of scale and cross-border effects.

OECD side events at Bonn Climate Change Talks, 8-14 June 2011

The OECD is pleased to announce its involvement in three side events at the UN Climate Change Talks in Bonn ("SB34"): on 8th June it hosted an event on MRV reporting in biennial reports. On 10th June, OECD and UNFCCC held a joint event on the MRV of support. On 14th June, OECD & IEA joined forces to examine how to ensure the integrity of emissions unit accounting after 2012. A publications stand featured recent OECD reports and publications on climate change.
