Large-scale study of populations may contribute significantly to science’s understanding of the complex multi-factorial basis of disease and to improvements in prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment and cure. This book summarises the proceedings of a conference on human genetic research databases. It examines what they are and provides a number of examples. It looks at how they have been established, governed, and funded, and how they are managed and commercialised, exploring what the policy implications are for governments.

In 2006, the International Futures Programme (IFP) began an 18-month project that aims to draft a broad policy agenda for governments in respect to the bioeconomy. The bioeconomy, a new concept, covers a broad range of economic activities, each benefiting from new discoveries, related products and services arising out of the biosciences. The project will assess how pervasive biotechnological applications are likely to become, the prospects for further development over the next two to three decades and the potential impact on the economy and society.
