The adoption of the euro at the start of 2009 marks a major achievement for the Slovak Republic. The main policy challenge is to sustain high trend growth while adjusting to life in the euro area. This requires structural reforms, above all in the areas of labour and product markets, fiscal policy and in the housing sector.

Euro area needs more integrated financial market supervision, says OECD’s Gurría

OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría has called for a more centralised and integrated supervision of Euro area banks and financial markets to help prevent a recurrence of the financial turmoil which triggered the current recession.

Australia reforms aid programme

Australia has made substantial, positive changes to its aid programme since 2004, reinforcing its focus on reducing poverty, on promoting the MDGs, and completely untying its aid programme. Its aid volume was USD 2.67 billion in 2007, representing 0.32% of its gross national income (GNI). Australia has committed to contributing 0.5% of its GNI to official development assistance (ODA) by 2015/16.

Short-term outlook for steel demand exceptionally weak, say industry experts

The global economic downturn is having a severe impact on the steel sector, according to government and industry representatives meeting at a joint OECD Steel Committee/ World Steel Association workshop in Kuala Lumpur. Steel demand, production, and prices have plummeted, major layoffs have been announced, and demand for key raw materials such as iron ore, ferrous scrap, and coal has declined sharply, said OECD Steel Committee Chairman Risaburo Nezu.

Norway increases official development assistance

Norway committed USD 3.7 billion to development assistance in 2007, a substantial increase over the previous year. It now gives the world’s highest level of official development assistance as a percentage of gross national income. Norway is also consistently at the forefront of donor efforts to improve the international aid system, as well as its own development policies and programmes.

OECD has been informed of a text dated 21 November 2008 purporting to be a “confidential memo” from OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Gordon Brown, commenting on the outlook for the U.K. economy. This text was prepared by a professor at a U.K. university as a teaching aid for his students, and does not reflect the views of OECD or of Mr Gurría.
