Sharp rise in aid to water and sanitation

Aid to water and sanitation rose sharply in the last decade to USD 8.2 billion in 2008-09 (total annual average aid commitments), with Japan providing the largest share (28%). Sub-Saharan Africa and South and Central Asia received the most - 27% and 19%, respectively.

Aid to health data now includes the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

This year, for the first time, our data includes grants made by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in global health. In 2009, the foundation disbursed USD 1.8 billion in grants, making it the third largest international donor to health.

Development: Aid increases, but with worrying trends

Aid flows from OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC) donor countries totalled USD 129 billion in 2010, the highest level ever, and an increase of 6.5% over 2009. This represents about 0.32% of the combined gross national income (GNI) of DAC member countries.
