Using input-output tables to measure globalisation

23-Jan-2008

Economic globalisation has typically been measured using trade and FDI statistics. However, the emergence of global value chains with products often fabricated in one country, assembled in a second and sold in a third country, challenges these traditional indicators. This paper shows how international input-output tables can be used to provide complementary indicators on the growing importance of these global value chains.

This has included efforts to improve the measurement of productivity growth and work to enhance the understanding of the drivers of productivity performance. The 2006 productivity compendium includes a large number of indicators together with methodological notes, and describes the measurement challenges, data choices and remaining measurement problems.

STI Working Paper 2006/8: The OECD Input-Output Tables: 2006 edition

24-Oct-2006

The development of the OECD’s input-output database started over a decade ago and it is currently undergoing its second update. This paper describes the database, its uses, and the OECD’s experience in the compilation of these tables in the hope that this may benefit input-output compilers in national statistical offices and provide them with a better understanding of the information needed by the OECD to compile these tables in order to meet the demands of users.

STI Working Paper 2005/8: The Contribution of Foreign Affiliates to Productivity Growth: Evidence from OECD Countries

31-Aug-2005

Firstly, this study quantifies the contribution of foreign affiliates to productivity growth in OECD countries using a growth accounting approach. The analysis shows how much of this contribution derives from an increase in the employment share of foreign affiliates in the host country relative to an increase in the productivity of existing foreign affiliates. The study also compares the presence of foreign affiliates across OECD countries.
