This paper examines the extent to which manufacturing output and employment are declining in OECD countries and explores possible causes, including increased productivity, slow growth in demand for manufacturing products, loss of markets to imports, statistical and classification issues, etc.

The development of the OECD’s input-output database started over a decade ago and it is currently undergoing its second update. This paper describes the database, its uses, and the OECD’s experience in the compilation of these tables in the hope that this may benefit input-output compilers in national statistical offices and provide them with a better understanding of the information needed by the OECD to compile these tables in order to meet the demands of users.

Over the past few years, there has been growing interest in internationally comparable statistics and indicators on productivity growth, which have become an important focus of OECD work. This has included efforts to improve the measurement of productivity growth and work to enhance the understanding of the drivers of productivity performance. The 2006 productivity compendium includes a large number of indicators together with methodological notes, and describes the measurement challenges, data choices and remaining measurement problems.
