OECD and UNITAR held Awareness-Raising Workshops on Nanotechnology/ Manufactured Nanomaterials for Developing and Transition Countries. These workshops were organised in conjunction with SAICM UN regional meetings during 2009-2010, under the auspices of the IOMC following a request for action regarding nanotechnologies and nanomaterials. The workshops informed on potential applications and risks from nanotechnologies and manufactured nanomaterials as well as looked for opportunities for awareness raising activities to be undertaken in those countries.

PESTICIDES: Publication of the Report of the Seminar on Pesticide Risk Reduction through Better National Risk Management Strategies for Aerial Application

This report presents the results of an OECD Seminar (San Francisco, US, February 2009) that reviewed the various issues associated with pesticide aerial application, such as risks and benefits, technical developments, and communication and information aspects. The Seminar recommended that the OECD promote information exchange on aerial application and develop a code of best/good practices for aerial application.

This report presents the results of a 2008 survey on how OECD countries set Pesticide Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs). It includes: • a summary of the issues raised in the countries’ responses; • matrices based on the responses, which list the national authorities responsible for establishing MRLs and approving pesticide products, describe the types of MRLs established, and assess the impact on MRL harmonisation; and • the individual responses from countries.

A guidance document for using the OECD (Q)SAR Application Toolbox to fill data gaps for acute aquatic toxicity is now available. The (Q)SAR Application Toolbox is a software application intended to be used by governments, industry and other stakeholders to fill gaps in (eco)toxicity data needed for assessing the hazards of chemicals. This new document specifically provides guidance on how to use the Toolbox to group chemicals to fill data gaps for acute aquatic toxicity of chemicals.
