The OECD released the Assessment and Recommendations of the Environmental Performance Review of Japan. The full report will be launched on the occasion of the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, to be held in Nagoya (Japan) from 18 to 29 October 2010. Japan is the first country to undergo a third OECD Environmental Performance Review.

Ireland should use the economic crisis to move to a clean, low-carbon society, says OECD Secretary-General Gurria

The current economic crisis offers an opportunity to transform Ireland’s growth model and make it stronger, cleaner and fairer. The OECD Secretary-General is presenting 38 recommendations to the Irish government to help move in that direction. Recommendations include:
• Strengthening efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions
• Charging households for consumption of water
• Ratifying the Aarhus Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-Making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters.

Environmental Performance Reviews - Finland (2009)

A new OECD report analyses Finland’s environmental performance. It makes 43 recommendations, including that Finland should reduce greenhouse gas emissions, avoid further biodiversity loss, and protect the Baltic Sea.

The report will be released at a news conference on 5 June 2009 by Finnish Ministers Ms. Paula Lehtomäki (Environment) and Mr. Jan Vapaavuori (Housing); and Lorents Lorentsen, OECD Environment Director.

Turkey compares well with other OECD countries in terms of biodiversity and its relatively low level of greenhouse gas emissions per head of population, but it faces significant future environmental challenges due to unsustainable patterns of production and consumption, according to a new OECD report.

In the lead-up to joining the European Union, Hungary made significant progress in reducing air and water pollution and protecting its nature and biodiversity. OECD’s latest Review of the Environmental Performance of Hungary recommends that it redouble its efforts, in order to further reduce pollution and use energy and raw materials more efficiently.

OECD urges Australia to strengthen its environmental efforts

OECD says Australia should better manage the environment by protecting its natural resources, improving energy efficiency and using more environmentally friendly taxes and prices. While OECD welcomes Australia’s progress in tackling environmental issues over the past decade, it notes that Australia must take further steps to ‘green’ its economy and to face climate change and water challenges.

A new OECD report on Denmark notes progress in tackling environmental challenges over the last ten years, but insists the country must green its economy (e.g. transport, agriculture, energy sectors and fiscal policies) and must face special challenges associated with health, biodiversity, and marine protection. The report makes 37 specific recommendations. It was released at a news conference on 25 January 2008 by Mr. T.L. Poulsen, Minister for the Environment of Denmark; L. Lorentsen, OECD Environment Director; and C. Avérous, head of OECD's national environmental reviews.
