Workshop on "Maximizing Outcomes with Minimum Resources for Development Communication"

On 31 May-1 June 2010, MASHAV - Israel's Agency for International Development Cooperation, and DevCom co-hosted a workshop "Maximizing Outcomes with Minimum Resources for Development Communication". Over thirty communicators and development experts gathered to discuss strategies and tools to achieve better outcomes of their communication actions. Participants also discussed the use of social media (blogs, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) for development communication. Israel was the host of the event, and other new OECD members - Estonia and Slovenia – participated in the workshop.

Seminar on Aid Effectiveness & Regional Economic Integration

This seminar on "Challenges in Cooperation and Communication for Development in Southeast Asia" was organised on 26 & 27 April in Hanoi, Viet Nam. It aimed at helping ASEAN policy makers find innovative policy solutions to stay competitive, strengthen social cohesion and reduce existing gaps between countries of the region through regional integration.

It was hosted by the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Government of Viet Nam, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Korea, and the OECD Development Centre.

Multilateral Aid & the Broad Public: Improving Results Communication

The African Development Bank and DevCom organised a round-table conference on 22 & 23 March 2010 in Tunis. This joint initiative aimed to improve the practice of communicating on multilateral aid to the broad public.

The 2009 Annual Meeting of the Informal Network of DAC Development Communicators

The 2009 DevCom Annual Meeting took place on 8-10 November and was hosted by IrishAid in Dublin. 70 communicators and experts from donor institutions shared best practices on issues such as communicating results and aid effectiveness, implications for communication specialists arising from the economic crisis, use of new technologies and social media in development communication, polling for public opinion. Among invited speakers were Dambisa Moyo, Simon Maxwell and Jamie Drummond.

OECD countries launch drive for better development results reporting

Following on the 2008 meeting on development results reporting, OECD countries are developing guidelines to improve aid accountability. The guidelines will promote cooperation in the fields of results based management, evaluation and communication.

Over the past 20 years, public attitudes towards aid in OECD countries have remained steadily positive throughout economic ups and downs. At the same time, polling data shows that voters continue to strongly support aid to developing countries, despite the financial crisis.

The 2008 Annual Meeting of the Informal Network of DAC Development Communicators

For the first time the DevCom Annual Meeting was hosted by the United States. It brought together more than 65 communicators and experts, including new donors such as Israel and Thailand. The issues covered during the sessions were communicating results and aid effectiveness, new trends on the Internet, communication strategies of non-state actors, making development more media-friendly, polling for public opinion. The meeting also provided the opportunity for several members states to share best practices.

Managing for and Communicating about Development Results

This DevCom Network meeting was organised in collaboration with the Joint Venture on Managing for Development Results and attended by representatives of more than twenty bilateral and multilateral aid agencies. Policy makers and development communicators were able to share their respective views on development results. Discussions constituted a first step in the development of guiding principles on the role of communications in managing results.

Summary report of the 2007 Annual DevCom Meeting

In November 2007, the members of the Informal Network of DAC Development Communicators met in Lisbon for two days of brainstorming about the current state and future of development communication. The summary report gives an overview of the discussions and projects for the coming year.
