The challenge is to take advantage of the favourable macroeconomic environment to lift productivity performance, raise living standards and tackle the informal job market. ICTs can play an important part in achieving goals by improving economic performance and increasing competitiveness. This report analyses ICT policies and their effectiveness in achieving overall economic goals.

The ICT industry is expected to grow by 6% in 2006 and, looking ahead, highest growth will be driven by Internet-related investments, Linux servers, digital storage, personal digital assistants and new portable consumer products. But any return to the heady days of 20% and 30% growth in many products and market segments in the 1990s are unlikely, according to the 2006 edition of the OECD’s Information Technology Outlook, just released.
