The economic crisis has hit the entire world economy, with governments stepping in to rescue financial systems and kick-start economic growth. This adds up to a triumph for government fiscal policy, though fiscal policy must be used audaciously, not least in Latin America.

Lors de la présentation à Bogota des Perspectives Économiques de l’Amérique Latine 2009, le Ministre colombien des Affaires étrangères Jaime Bermúdez a estimé que cette publication constituait une « valeur inestimable pour le développement de la région ». À l’occasion de cet événement qui a rassemblé plus de 300 participants, le Ministre Bermúdez a également souligné l’importance de la récente adhésion de la Colombie au Centre de Développement en juin 2008.

Indonesia has become the 34th member of the OECD’s Development Centre. A member of the G20 with an estimated population of around 237 million people and a GDP of over 400 billion dollars, Indonesia is a key country in Southeast Asia and an important international player. The OECD considers Indonesia to be one of the countries with which it has the most interest in increased co-operation.

To celebrate the adoption of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families in 1990, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the 18th of December as International Migrants Day. As shown by the work of the Development Centre, migrants continue to be an important factor to promote development in their countries' of origin.

Over the past 20 years, public attitudes towards aid in OECD countries have remained steadily positive throughout economic ups and downs. At the same time, polling data shows that voters continue to strongly support aid to developing countries, despite the financial crisis.

For the first time the DevCom Annual Meeting was hosted by the United States. It brought together more than 65 communicators and experts, including new donors such as Israel and Thailand. The issues covered during the sessions were communicating results and aid effectiveness, new trends on the Internet, communication strategies of non-state actors, making development more media-friendly, polling for public opinion. The meeting also provided the opportunity for several members states to share best practices.

As integration of the Asian Drivers into the world economy has shaped primary commodity markets and the combined contribution of China and India to global growth is substantial, Latin America should rethink its trade strategy to those countries to take advantage of exports complementarity and the rising demand for commodities and agricultural goods.

The current financial crisis is now hitting developing and emerging countries hard. The Development Centre is currently analysing several aspects of the crisis, with the objective of offering relevant policy insights and solutions to better tackle the consequences of the financial crisis.
