For some aspects of higher education outputs and outcomes, such as the type and number of degrees awarded, the research outputs produced or the labour-market returns to higher education studies, numerous indicators exist at both national and international levels. However, for other aspects, and most notably for the learning outcomes of higher education, available data are much more limited.

The main purpose of the second meeting of experts was to consider existing approaches to the assessment of higher education learning outcomes and to explore the design of a study to assess the feasibility of pursuing such work in an international comparative context.

PEB organised a conference entitled “Sustainable Spaces and Places for Learning, Innovation and Knowledge Transfer” in collaboration with the Helsinki University of Technology, Finland. The event was held in May 2008 and identified global and local possibilities to provide quality environments for higher education. Both physical and virtual environments were addressed.

The Netherlands’ Ministry of Education has announced the winners of its eighth annual School Building Prize, recognising projects in the primary and secondary education sectors. The ministry awards this prize to encourage school boarders to be visionary, creative and professional when building new schools and rebuilding or renovating existing ones. The aim is to provide infrastructure that facilitates the education process as much as possible. The theme of the School Building Prize 2006 was “My school is unique because…”.

While the report illuminates the unprecedented spending and growth on U.S. public school construction over the last decade, it reveals that a tremendous disparity exists in who has benefited from the billions of public dollars invested.
