Tertiary education in Chile is ready for a second generation of reforms

Education has been a consistent priority of Chile since the early 1990s. The government’s firm commitment to access and equity has led to ever-increasing numbers of young people entering tertiary education, posing challenges for both its financing and quality. A new joint OECD and World Bank review of tertiary education finds that the government has responded admirably to these challenges, creating a dynamic and responsive system.  But as Chile accedes to full membership in the OECD and enrolment continues to grow, reforms in key areas are now needed.

Earthquake in China Highlights the Vulnerability of Schools in Many Countries

The New York Times quotes the OECD publication Keeping Schools Safe in Earthquakes, which concludes that “schools ‘routinely’ collapsed in earthquakes around the world because of avoidable design or construction errors, or because existing laws and building codes were not enforced”. A review of OECD countries’ implementation of the Recommendation Concerning Guidelines on Earthquake Safety in Schools, featured in the report and approved by OECD Council in 2005, is under way.

The reports: Improving School Leadership: Policy and Practice; and Improving School Leadership: Case Studies and Concepts for Systemic Action, provide information and analysis to help policy makers formulate and implement school leadership policies leading to improved teaching and learning. Drawing on related literature and PISA data, the publications are based on country background reports by the participating countries and five case studies on innovative practices in (a) school leadership for systemic improvement and (b) training and development of school leaders.

OECD and World Bank sign MOU on promoting education for children with disabilities

The OECD and World Bank have signed a Memorandum of Understanding over the coming five years to co-operate on the gathering of prevalence data on children with disabilities. The intention is to provide data  to inform planning to achieve the Millennium Development Goals 2 and 3. These focus on achieving universal completion of primary education by 2015 and promoting the education of girls.
