Does environmental policy induce technological innovation?

Understanding the role that technological change can play in achieving environmental objectives is important since innovations can allow for improved environmental quality at lower cost. However, the relationship between environmental policy and technological innovation remains an area in which evidence remains limited. A new OECD summarises results of three case studies undertaken: abatement technologies for wastewater effluent from pulp production; abatement of motor vehicle emissions; and development of renewable energy technologies.

Workshop on the safety testing of manufactured nanomaterials, Korea

This workshop is being held to move forward the "Sponsorship Programme" which was launched in 2007. This programme involves the safety testing of 14 nanomaterials for a set of endpoints related to human health and environmental safety. Amongst other things, the Workshop will assist those who will be organising the testing (OECD member countries together with the European Commission, China and Industry) to develop and co-ordinate their testing plans. This workshop is hosted by the Ministry of Environment in Korea and will take place on November 19-21 in Busan, Korea.

Inventory of International Initiatives Related to Sustainable Materials Management

This study provides a summary of international initiatives that are relevant for Sustainable Materials Management, covering global and regional organisations, as well as business and industry associations, environmental NGOs and research organisations. A total of 67 initiatives have been identified at the international level that focus on reducing environmental impacts throughout the life-cycle of materials and bearing a relationship with waste and material policies, while taking into account economic efficiency and social equity.

A Study on Methodologies Relevant to the OECD Approach on Sustainable Materials Management

This study provides an overview of ten methodologies used, directly or indirectly, to assess material use in terms of its potential impacts on the environment, benefits to society and value for the economy. The study aims to promote understanding of the strengths and limitations of these methodologies in promoting more sustainable management of materials. It presents an overview of each methodology according to its type and scope, points in the part of the life-cycle it covers and potential links to other methodologies in this study.
