This database presents patent data linked to regions according to the addresses of the applicants and inventors. The data have been regionalised at a very detailed level so that over 2000 regions are covered across OECD countries. REGPAT allows patent data to be used in connection with other regional data, thus providing researchers with the means to develop a rich set of new indicators and undertake a broad range of analyses to address the regional dimension of innovation.

OECD has just issued a new report on convergence and next generation networks and their potential impact on policies and regulations. The report addresses issues of competition in the new fibre environment, convergence of video, voice and data services, the rapid growth of new technologies, such as HDTV and mobile television, and the related demand for spectrum, as well as new possible "divides" between urban and rural areas created by the uneven development of high-speed fibre networks.

To achieve this, funding agency programme managers, laboratory officials, representatives of advisory bodies, and the scientific community met to discuss the future of the field. Their report identifies the major challenges in the field, and describes a global-scale roadmap of national and regional facilities. Recommendations for actions are addressed to the funding agencies and to the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics.
