The African Tax Administrators Forum endorses the AEO 2010 theme

The most important capacity-building institution for African tax administrators, ATAF, advocated the policy recommendations made in the Centre’s study on 'Domestic Resource Mobilization and Aid’. In its first ever newsletter to members, ATAF administrators reprinted the study’s findings, declaring the 2010 African Economic Outlook study "strong in its analysis of how tax policy and administration could be improved".

 

Curtain Closes on the 10th Annual Africa Forum

An unprecedented number of African Ministers and CEOs debated Africa's prospects in this anniversary International Economic Forum on Africa on June 11th. Debate focused on Africa's strategies for regaining pre-crisis growth rates during the morning session. In the afternoon talk turned to fiscal challenges, including the relationship between taxes and aid. Here ministers sat face-to-face with representatives from extractive industries to discuss frankly how Africa can get a better deal on the presence of lucrative industries within their borders.

2010 AEO finds the continent poised to recover from the crisis

The 2010 African Economic Outlook was launched at the African Development Bank’s Annual Meetings in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. This year’s edition finds the continent reeling from the effects of the world’s deepest and most widespread recession in half a century. The good news is that the region has proved remarkably resilient to the downturn. Average growth is expected to rebound in 2010 and in 2011, although the recession will leave its mark.

China in Africa: Debunking myths and debating truths

In the context of its ongoing work on new trade and development partners in Africa, the Development Centre hosted a presentation and debate of Asia/Africa expert Deborah Brautigam’s new book The Dragon’s Gift: The Real Story of China in Africa. Professor Brautigam began by explaining away the greatest myths surrounding China’s engagement in Africa and ended with a summary of the different approaches to development held by China and traditional donors to the region.

Development Centre and African Union collaborate to build on 2009 AEO study

The OECD Development Centre and the African Union (AU) have agreed to examine together the economic impact of open access to new high capacity cables along Africa’s West and East coasts. The study, which will be presented at the 2010 AU ministerial meeting in Nigeria, will highlight how these developments can provide consumers with more choices for equipment and services. The decision was reached during the 27 January AU Summit of Heads of State in Addis Ababa where Laura Recuero-Virto, author of the 2009 study, was invited to participate in an ICT infrastructure and applications seminar.

Africa: Taxing its way out of aid dependence?

The OECD Development Centre, the African Development Bank and the UN Economic Commission for Africa gathered experts in Paris to discuss public resource mobilization and its role in reducing Africa’s dependence on external financial flows especially aid. Academics, development practitioners and experts from Africa and OECD used the December 14th meeting to debate the extent and sustainability of taxation’s contribution to Africa’s development. The discussions will provide inputs to the 2010 African Economic Outlook, which will be launched in May in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The Centre is pleased to announce that the African Economic Outlook, one of the OECD Development Centre’s flagship reports, won the Best in Class Interactive Media Award (IMA) for its website with an overall score of 500. This is the first perfect score in the history of IMA.

Alors que les liens entre l’Afrique et les pays émergents se renforcent, une nouvelle étude du Centre de Développement intitulé “L’appropriation des politiques économiques et la conditionnalité de l’aide face à la crise financière”, suggère que les bénéficiaires de l'aide publique au développement devraient profiter de l’émergence de nouveaux donneurs pour demander une réduction des conditions posées par les pays donateurs.

African Economic Outlook 2009

The 2009 edition of the African Economic Outlook (AEO) covers 47 African countries, up from 35 last year. The report finds the region gravely affected by the global economic downturn. Following half a decade of above 5 per cent economic growth, the continent can expect only 2.8 per cent in 2009, less than half of the 5.7 per cent expected before the crisis.

African Economic Outlook 2007 : launch date is announced

The 2007 edition of the African Economic Outlook (AEO 2007) will be launched for the media on 14 May at the OECD Forum in Paris. The 2007 edition, covering 31 African countries, provides a special focus on water and sanitation.
