Environment and Governance in China

China has made remarkable progress in sustaining high economic growth rates, raising incomes and lengthening life expectancy. However, the pattern of economic growth, rapid industrializations and urbanization has not been environmentally sustainable. The implementation of a "new development strategy" by central government has been supported by important changes in environmental governnance structures, the introduction of many new environmental laws and regulations, institutional capacity building and raising environmental awareness.

This chapter aims to identify areas where further efforts to design and implement environmental policies should be made to promote economic development while at the same time enabling social and environmental objectives.
