PISA 2006 - country note on the United Kingdom

In PISA 2006, the UK performs above-average in science overall, and also has an above-average level of top performers.
2.9% of 15-year-olds in the UK reach Level 6 on the science scale, demonstrating that they can consistently identify, explain and apply scientific knowledge, and knowledge about science, in a variety of complex life situations (OECD average 1.3%). They can link different information sources and explanations and use evidence from those sources to justify decisions. They clearly and consistently demonstrate advanced scientific thinking and reasoning, and they demonstrate use of their scientific understanding in support of solutions to unfamiliar scientific and technological situations (Table 2.1a).
13.7% of 15-year-olds in the UK reach at least Level 5 (OECD average 9%) (Table 2.1a).
