Small Business in Transition Economies

In the four countries studied in this volume, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovak Republic, the rapid expansion of the small business sector is proving a dynamic factor in support of economic revival. This study compares and contrasts how small and medium-sized enterprises developed in the four countries and examines the policies that influenced their growth. Among the issues discussed are: the development of the institutional and macroeconomic framework; limitations and barriers to the growth of the private sector; state policies to promote SMEs; the development of support networks at the local level; and the local and regional dimension of small enterprise sector growth.
