Long abstract

PISA tests 15-year-olds in the domains of reading, mathematical and scientific literacy not merely in terms of mastery of the school curriculum, but in terms of important knowledge and skills needed in adult life. In 2003, the examination of cross-curriculum competencies was carried out through the assessment of problem solving skills. In PISA 2009, an optional assessment of reading electronic texts is taking place in some participating countries/economies.
