Conference: Local employment, skills and entrepreneurship strategies in the Mediterranean - Developing pathways for the future (Barcelona, Spain)

Organised by the Union For the Mediterranean in cooperation with LEED and the City of Barcelona, this conference brought together Ministries of Labour, Ministries of Education and practitioners to discuss local skills development and its link to local job creation and sustainable growth. The meeting discussed operational pathways to address high youth unemployment as well as skills development for women’s integration in local labour markets and developing the best environment for SMEs to thrive.

Workshop: Skills development for stronger local economic development and better job opportunities abroad (Phnom Penh, Cambodia)

This workshop provided an opportunity to discuss ways to increase the effectiveness of actions to boost skills development to stimulate good quality employment both abroad and in the country. How can a joined-up approach be taken locally? How can skills development best support sustainable economic development in the country and better quality employment abroad? What are the international lessons applicable to Cambodia in training workers for work abroad and re-integrating them in the local labour market?

Conference: Local and regional strategies to relaunch economic and employment development (Trento, Italy)

High level policy makers, economists and representatives of international and European institutions discussed the future of global economic and financial development and debated the crucial role played by regions and localities in the recovery and development of economic competitiveness. The conference provided a means to exchange good practice and drew up policy recommendation to achieve tangible results. Aart de Geus, OECD Deputy Secretary General, and Sergio Arzeni, Director of the CFE Directorate, contributed to the discussion.

Workshop: Policies and strategies for demographic change - Skills, employment and sustainable development (Paris, France)

The workshop was organised as an experts’ roundtable and aimed at (i) sharing information amongst experts on on-going and future work in respective policy fields, addressing demographic change; (ii) identifing key policy questions to be explored as well as key work of the OECD and other institutions to be referenced in the OECD LEED project on local scenarios of demographic change; and (iii) discussing collaboration opportunities and follow-up policy dialogues on the topic. For further information please contact cristina.martinez@oecd.org.

In the framework of the 6th Festival of Economics on "The borders of economic freedom", the OECD LEED Trento Centre, in cooperation with the School on Local Development of the University of Trento, organised a round-table session on "Labour and productivity: the role of institutions, trade unions and business in the current economic crisis", which took place at the OECD Trento Centre (Vicolo S. Marco, 1) on Friday 3 June at 11.00 am. Aart de Geus, OECD Deputy Secretary General, and Sergio Arzeni, Director of the CFE Directorate, contributed to the discussion.

Conference: Kick-starting economic recovery - The role of entrepreneurship in structural funds (Berlin, Germany)

Conference participants learnt from experts in the fields of entrepreneurship education, quality management for start-up support, integrated business support and access to finance how ESF and ERDR are being used by managing authorities across Europe to stimulate entrepreneurship.  The event was organised by the ESF Learning Network Community of Practice for Inclusive Entrepreneurship (COPIE 2).  It took place at the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften in Berlin-Mitte and was by invitation only. 

Conference: Improving social inclusion at the local level through the social economy. Presentation of the OECD report (Ljubljana, Slovenia)

This conference presented the report prepared for Slovenia as part of the OECD LEED "Improving social inclusion at the local level through the social economy" project in the framework of the Forum on Social Innovations. A team comprising members of the OECD LEED Secretariat and external experts visited Slovenia in January 2010 and in April 2010 for two study visits, to examine the role, both real and potential, of the social economy, and the support which could be given to the social economy to allow it to fulfil that potential.

Innovation dans les régions - Connaissances et conclusions de l'Examen territorial de la Suisse 2011

L'examen territorial de la Suisse 2011  offre une évaluation complète de la Nouvelle politique régionale du pays, mise en oeuvre suite à l'examen de 2002. Il examine le role de l'innovation dans les régions suisses et comment les instruments politiques de promotion de l’innovation qui ont été mis en place par la Confédération et par les cantons pourraient être optimisés. Lors du séminaire de deux jours organisé à Coire, Suisse, l’OCDE présentera pour la première fois au public ses conclusions et ses recommandations.
