The objective of this workshop was to take stock of advances in social networks analysis and explore the possible use of this approach in OECD work, notably on innovation. It sought to present the network approach to economists and stimulate discussion with experts on the analytical potential of this approach for innovation analysis and measurement. While well documented in the US and Europe, open innovation strategies to mobilise knowledge and technology inside and outside firms are also being launched in Asia. To take stock of recent developments and share experience between western and Asian OECD countries, the Japanese Ministry of Economy and Industry (METI) is hosting this symposium. This conference, to take place in Rochester, NY, USA, will aim to promote the concepts and practices of sustainable manufacturing among diverse businesses, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Leading academics and industry practitioners are expected to be among the speakers and panelists, along with high-level policy makers. The presentations and discussions will help the OECD to identify the needs for the future work in this area.

Le Comité de l’acier, forum mondial dans lequel sont examinés les problèmes multilatéraux du secteur de l’acier et les solutions envisageables, a tenu sa 64ème session à Paris-La Défense, les 22-23 mai 2008. Des représentants des gouvernements, de la sidérurgie et d’autres parties prenantes se sont réunis pour débattre de la situation et des perspectives pour le secteur de l’acier et les marchés de matières premières, les échanges d’acier, les politiques commerciales, les mesures d’aide publique à l’acier et les enjeux environnementaux.

The OECD Washington Center regularly holds OECD Breakfast Series events to promote OECD work, and to give the Washington audience a chance to interact with OECD officials. The presentation will provide information on developments and trends, focusing in particular on the growing use of the Internet to conduct ID crime. Efforts to combat the theft will be described, as will policy guidance that was recently approved by the OECD's Committee on Consumer Policy. The discussants will provide further insights on how issues are affecting consumers in Canada and the United States.
