Sustainability and Green Growth are high on the political agenda in the run up to the UN Conference on Climate Change in December 2009. But it is businesses which face some of the greatest challenges, and perhaps opportunities, from the move towards a green economy. How can firms incorporate sustainability into their strategies, and what effect will this have on their performance? Will this effect vary between sectors? Can governments effectively create demand for innovation and sustainable demand through regulation and public procurement?

A two day Round Table was held under the auspices of the OECD Working Party on SMEs and Entrepreneurship (WPSMEE) in Turin, Italy on 26 and 27 March 2009 at the invitation of the Banca Intesa Sanpaolo. The round table aimed to promote a tri-partite dialogue among governments, SMEs and financial institutions, on possible measures to help SMEs and entrepreneurs through the crisis and suggest recommendations. It will be a basis for the WPSMEE's input into the OECD Strategic Response to the Financial and Economic Crisis.

The Working Party on Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Entrepreneurship (WPSMEE) of the OECD, in partnership with the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the U.S. Department of Commerce organised an international workshop in Kansas City on innovation and the global impact of high-growth small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It took place on May 8, at the Kauffman Foundation headquarters in Kansas City. The workshop was an important milestone in an OECD study on "High Growth SMEs, Innovation, Intellectual Assets and Value Creation"

The OECD Global Conference on Enhancing the Role of SMEs in Global Value Chains, held in Tokyo on 31 May-1 June 2007 brought together experts from governments, international organisations, academia, business and civil society to examine the conclusions of the study, review best practice policies and programmes and draft the Tokyo Action Statement – including policy recommendations -- for further work in this area.

This Workshop examined supply/demand and price/cost developments in the shipbuilding market, including the impacts of the current global economic crisis. It also explored the changing structure of the world’s shipbuilding industry, and both governments and industry had the opportunity of discussing what responses can be made to deal with the challenges created by the market and structural changes.
