The OECD and the Business Industry Advisory Committee (BIAC) are hosting, within the context of the OECD's 50th anniversary, a one-day conference to explore improvements in health systems over the last 50 years and the challenges of meeting the needs of an increasingly aged population whilst keeping costs down.

OECD Workshop Risk Assessment of Manufactured Nanomaterials in a Regulatory Context

This workshop was held on 16-18 September 2009 in Washington D.C., United States. This Workshop was co-hosted with the Business and Industry Advisory Committee to OECD (BIAC) and the Society for Risk Analysis (SRA). The objectives were: i) to collect expert input to the critical issues specific for the risk assessments of nanomaterials; ii) to identify possible approaches for risk assessment based on the current state of knowledge; and iii) to identify issues which may be addressed through OECD’s testing programme. The workshop report will be available towards the end of the year.

Synthetic biology is a transformative set of technologies which offer great opportunities for the construction of bioengineered parts, devices and microorganisms. However, achieving the rewards offered by synthetic biology will require addressing a range of social, economic, ethical, and legal issues as well as overcoming scientific and technical challenges. Given the enormous promise of synthetic biology, it is critical to develop a framework and to engage the public in an informed dialogue.

Employment and social affairs ministers from 15 OECD countries will meet in Stockholm to discuss ways to improve sickness and disability policies and make them central to labour market strategies to deal with the impact of the current crisis and beyond. The Forum on “Sickness, Disability and Work: Addressing Policy Challenges in OECD Countries”, organised by the OECD and the government of Sweden, aims to help policy makers understand the importance of effective social and disability policies and how they can improve longer-term outcomes for the individuals concerned and society as a whole.

The OECD Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials (WPMN) and the OECD Working Party on Nanotechnology (WPN) recently held a Conference on Potential Environmental Benefits of Nanotechnolgy: Fostering Safe Innovation-Led Growth on 15-17 July in 2009 at the OECD Conference Centre in Paris, France. The conference covered both the opportunities and the challenges of the use of nanotechnologies for the potential benefits for the environment.

Workshop on Aligning National Systems for New Chemical Notification and Assessments (Rome, Italy)

The objective of the workshop is to further OECD's efforts to improve the efficiencies of new chemical notification systems in Member countries, by identifying ways to, among other things, implement a standard notification form across OECD countries, and harmonize exclusion/exemption requirements.

A celebration of 10 years of the Working Group on Pesticides and the 13th Meeting of the OECD Working Group on Pesticides, 4-6 February 2002, Paris

The OECD Working Group on Pesticides (WGP) will celebrate the 10 year anniversary of its formation on 4 February 2002. The WGP will hold a Brainstorming Session to identify future challanges in Pesticide Regulation. The Event will be followed by the 13th Meeting of the WGP, 5 and 6 February 2002.
