Ministers' meeting on vocational education and training

OECD education ministers met informally in Denmark to discuss vocational education and training (VET). The Organisation's Secretary-General, Angel Gurría, presented key issues, namely VET in the service of the economy, boundaries between learning and work, migration, inclusion, status and the need for comparative data. His remarks and other meeting documents including the Chair's Summary are available online.

Evaluating Quality in Educational Facilities: PEB Working Group

To help countries improve the quality of their school buildings, grounds and equipment, PEB established an ad hoc Working Group on Evaluating Quality in Educational Facilities. At its first meeting, held in Paris on 18-19 September 2006, the working group participants discussed PEB’s existing framework on quality evaluation and ways of developing quality indicators, common user-centred tools and international quality benchmarks.

School earthquake safety in the ECO region

Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) agreed to organise an international workshop on earthquake safety in schools, which the Ministry of National Education, Turkey, offered to host in Istanbul on 1-2 June 2006.

Global Learning Environments Summit - Sharing the Learning

This summit, held in the United Kingdom, explored trends in teaching and learning and how these are supported by the design of learning environments. Themes included sustainability, ICT, community usage, small schools, learning in other settings and refurbishment. The PEB Compendium was launched at this event. Contact: peb@oecd.org.

Emerging Models for Learning and Innovation

This is the theme of an OECD conference in Mérida, Yucatan, Mexico. This event is the culmination of intensive reflection and field work over the past year with Mexico in the lead role as part of CERI’s “Schooling for Tomorrow” programme. Higher Education Facilities Conference

A selection of presentations made at the international PEB seminar "Higher Education Facilities: Issues and Trends" in Zacatecas, Mexico, 29–30 May 2006, is now available. This event aimed to identify current challenges in the field of higher education facilities, examine current trends influencing their planning, design and management, and share best practices and new approaches.

Educational Security Conference

This conference, organised by the International Security Management and Crime Prevention Institute, in co-operation with PEB, explored the theme Challenges in Security: Understanding and Effectively Managing Security Related Risks. Delegates from schools, colleges and universities from around the world met in Adelaide, Australia, to share initiatives, discuss challenges and develop new strategies to better understand security related risks in educational settings. Making Space: Architecture and Design for Young Children

An international conference on designing spaces for early-childhood education will take place in Edinburgh, United Kingdom. The event is organised by Children in Scotland with the support of the OECD Programme on Educational Building (PEB), The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland and Children in Europe. An exhibition of entries from 17 countries to the 2005 international award for architecture and design for young children will be on display. Ad hoc experts meeting on "Earthquake Safety in Schools"
