Making sure that materials are managed sustainably and used efficiently through their life-cycle is vital to economic growth, environmental quality and sustainable development. A shift from “end-of-life” thinking towards a more integrated life-cycle approach is urgently needed and was discussed at the OECD Global Forum on Environment in October 2010 in Belgium: OECD and non-OECD governments as well as all actors in the materials life-cycle (i.e. business, NGOs, consumers) met to discuss coherent policy approaches for Sustainable Materials Management (SMM).
