OECD/China/World Steel Association Workshop on Future Priorities for the Global Steel Industry

We regret to inform you that the Workshop that was being organised in co-operation with the Chinese Ministry of Commerce and the World Steel Association on "Future Priorities for the Global Steel Industry", to be held in Beijing on 20-22 October 2010, has to be postponed. Both the Chinese Ministry of Commerce and the OECD have worked closely together and did extensive preparatory work for the event. The postponement is due to organisational issues which emerged at a late stage. Despite various co-operative efforts, these issues could not be resolved in time to ensure a successful event.

But it is businesses which face some of the greatest challenges, and perhaps opportunities, from the move towards a green economy. How can firms incorporate sustainability into their strategies, and what effect will this have on their performance? Will this effect vary between sectors? Can governments effectively create demand for innovation and sustainable demand through regulation and public procurement?

66th Session of the OECD Steel Committee 8-9 June 2009

Senior Government officials and industry representatives from major Steel-producing economies met in Paris on 8-9 June in the context of the OECD Steel Committee. They assessed the impact of the global economic crisis on industrial sectors and, in particular, on the steel market.

OECD Shipbuilding Workshop with non-OECD economies and industry

This Workshop examined supply/demand and price/cost developments in the shipbuilding market, including the impacts of the current global economic crisis.  It also explored the changing structure of the world’s shipbuilding industry, and both governments and industry had the opportunity of discussing what responses can be made to deal with the challenges created by the market and structural changes. International conference on sustainable manufacturing

This conference, to take place in Rochester, NY, USA, will aim to promote the concepts and practices of sustainable manufacturing among diverse businesses, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Leading academics and industry practitioners are expected to be among the speakers and panelists, along with high-level policy makers. The presentations and discussions will help the OECD to identify the needs for the future work in this area.

The Steel Committee, a global platform where multilateral steel problems and policy solutions are discussed, held its 64th session in Paris, La Défense, on 22-23 May 2008. Governments, industry representatives and other stakeholders met to discuss issues including the outlook for steel and raw material markets, steel trade and trade policy developments, government support measures for steel, and environmental challenges.
