It is easy to think that we have reached the ‘end of history’ with regard to aid. A “consensus model” of development cooperation appears well-established, with progress being made on most of its components. The impression is that only small adjustments are necessary, allowing policy analysts to turn to other controversial subjects. Well, not quite. New research challenges the consensus model and shows that the aid debate continues to require experts' attention.

Guest speaker: Mr. Dani Rodrik, Professor of International Political Economy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Professor Rodrik, whose research focuses on what constitutes good economic policy and why some governments are better than others in adopting it, has published widely on issues related to trade policy, political economy, and economic reform in developing economies. His 1997 book “Has Globalization Gone Too Far?” was hailed by Business Week as “one of the most important economics books of the decade”.

Guest speaker: Mr. Omar Kabbaj, President of the African Development Bank.

During his distinguished career Mr. Kabbaj has held a series of high-profile positions in domestic and international public service. Prior to his election as President of the AfDB in 1995, he served as Minister Delegate in charge of economic affairs in the office of the Prime Minister of Morocco. This followed over a decade’s service as a member of the IMF Executive Board on which he represented a number of African and Asian countries.

Informal Experts' Seminar on Land, Conflict and Development: What Role for Donors?, 19 - 20 June 2003, Paris

The aim of the seminar was to help formulate preliminary proposals/guidance on how donors can best incorporate land issues in their policy frameworks for the management and mitigation of conflict, and propose next steps to further advance this agenda. Policy conclusion will be available soon.
