This conference shed light on a crucial issue concerning the phenomenon of globalisation and its impacts upon the development of the “knowledge economy”: the link between innovation, structural change and productivity growth amid the intensification of cross-border economic linkages. It discussed the scope for public policy in implementing a national innovation and growth strategy in the global economy, and offered guidance for future work in this domain, in particular by the OECD Committee on Industry, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE).

The Blue Sky II Forum taking place in Ottawa on 25-27 September 2006 will set a broad agenda for future work on science, technology and innovation (STI) indicators. The forum will bring together public policy researchers, economists, social scientists and statisticians, as well as policy makers, government officials and other interested parties. Statistics Canada, the OECD, the US National Science Foundation and Industry Canada have partnered to host this landmark conference.
